I have decided to include both a performative and narrative aspect to the video, but it will not only include a performance by my artist, but also many other girls that are lip-syncing. This will create the impression that all of the girls are just as important and talented instead of distinguishing the artist because she is famous. I believe that this will add to the impact of the song as it accentuates the video idea that although everyone can do similar things (such as singing the same song), they are also all different. The lack of importance on who the real artist is shows this as all of the girls within the video, no matter their skin tone, ability to hear, age, or what they enjoy doing, they are all just as important as each other. This nuance should be picked up by the audience and help them to feel represented through the fact that no whole face is shown singing, that this presentation of uniqueness can represent them too. This idea also advocates the artist to audience members that want to follow progressive music as both song and music video are showing an important message of equality.
There are two narratives in the video: the first of two different groups of girls going throughout their day and having fun, and the second of girls (the group of them included) posing for individual or group shots. This will represent how different aspects of life are all equally weighted and that every interest is valid. They will be wearing their own choice of clothing to add authenticity to the video as it is meant to represent them, not an idealised version of themselves. I am planning to try and use high-key lighting for the modelling shots - through the use of artificial lighting if necessary - but the groups of girls will be edited to lower quality to make it seem as if they are old videos or taken on a phone camera, adding authenticity to their fun day out as it is does not seem like a professional setting. These lower-quality shots will only be taken with natural lighting to add authenticity.
I am hoping to represent a myriad of social groups through this video, including ethnicity, hearing difficulties and age representation as the 'artist' is Japanese and there is a large group of people from which the audience will see interracial couples, ethnic minority groups and grandparents to great-grandchildren. There is one shot that contains all these three things, and the 'important thing' that is represented with them is family. This means that there are only a few shots with this group in, but it means that the audience can see a diverse range of people in one singular shot as well as in a myriad of individual shots, showing how every individual is unique and also how other people are important within an individual's life. I hope that the presentations of archetypes and subversions of the norm will be a progressive representation to show that even if someone fits within the stereotype of their gender, that is not a bad thing as family is not something to be ashamed of caring for.
My music video will include intertextual references to strong, independent women through style and is, at its core, is a homage to women and girls of all ages, genders and ethnicities because whether it be as a friend or a carer, women are significant and there is a lot of negativity surrounding female empowerment that needs to be dissolved.
I am hoping that my filming and editing style will relate to the video "Boys" by Charli XCX as it is a bright, joyful video that represents a diverse range of boys in an empowered way even though it subverts traditional masculinity through the motif of the colour pink. Although my video is not focussed on subverting stereotypes, this is the general tone of the video that I want to emulate as I do not want to say that girls are better than boys, I want to say that every girl is amazing, just as the "Boys" video can say that every boy is amazing. I am also taking inspiration for the performance aspect of the video from "Afterglow" - Big Wild as I believe that the performative and journey aspects in this video will add to the idea of every individual being unique and that growth is important. Some of the scenes are related to Western culture as well, such as the intertextual reference to The Breakfast Club as one of the groups walks across a field. This adds a feeling of differences being overcome and moving onto a better future to the video.
Relating to the codes and conventions of the pop genre, I will have bright colours and high-quality lighting unless it is a stylistic feature. I will include media language in order to create a stylish music video as well as editing the video in order to achieve better colour and shots that develop the narrative how I want. Most of the shots will take place in summer as it follows the conventions of the genre and will provide good natural lighting. I have intentionally planned for my video to subvert the conventional pop music video by taking the focus away from the artist and onto the message of the song through the artist not being the only performer. I plan to include a variety of mise-en-scene in which my characters can feature to show their particular interests to show the range of individual taste. Through the diversity in the video, I hope the audience will be able to relate to and understand the message of the video and song: that no matter what, they are special and as long as they are kind it does not matter what they enjoy. Through the actors doing things that they genuinely enjoy, I am hoping they will be more comfortable and confident in their shots which should create a sense of ease and enjoyment to watch through the camera. The cinematography will follow conventional pop-music conventions such as having the money to have these things to enjoy, such as a gaming console or being able to travel to another country which is hot and sunny. The lighting being generally high-key and purposefully attractive is also a convention of the pop genre.
My website will reveal who the artist of the video actually is as, although a few feature pictures of some of the other girls will be in the gallery, the artist is prominently featured through background photos. The two pages that I have chosen to include are the gallery and homepage, The homepage links to the video most explicably whilst the gallery depicts the artist's moving career through many different styles and locations, though the images taken during when she performed her part of the video are included and easy to link to both the homepage and video. The pictures have all been edited to fit my artist's image as a pop artist, and she is wearing clothes that appeal to her target demographic. There is also a range of locations in the gallery to show how she is working hard to stay up-to-date.
Therefore, although the video does not clarify who the artist is by intent, the website makes it abundantly clear and is targeted towards her specific audience. The video not making it clear who the artist is does directly link to her image as she is trying to promote equality and mindfulness in her audience about who they are within society, therefore not promoting herself as more important than them helps prove that message.
Statement
For my pop music video, I am using the song "Most Girls" by Hailee Steinfeld. I am planning to try and personify the lyrics and create an acclamation of girls whilst relating to the 16-25 AB demographic, and to produce an enjoyable music video that advertises the message within the song whilst also promoting the song and artist. I plan to target this demographic through the presentation of my 'artist' and the visuals within the video, which will hopefully be aspirational and relate to the audience members and will mainly consist of bright colours and a light-hearted tone.I have decided to include both a performative and narrative aspect to the video, but it will not only include a performance by my artist, but also many other girls that are lip-syncing. This will create the impression that all of the girls are just as important and talented instead of distinguishing the artist because she is famous.
