Statement of Intent
For my pop music video, I am using the song "We'll Be Forgetting This" by Elias Najilin. I am planning to first conform then subvert the lyrics within the song whilst relating to the 16-25 AB demographic with a universal portrayal of feeling left out. I plan to target this demographic through the presentation of my 'artist' and the visuals within the video, which will hopefully be aspirational and relate to the audience members and will mainly consist of bright colours.
I have decided to include a performative and narrative aspect to my video, which follows a lot of pop music video trends. The artist will not participate in the narrative but will be placed in locations similar or the same as the one in the narrative, however she will share clothing aspects with the girls which imply that she has been in the position of both the one left out and the one leaving someone out. I believe this will add to the impact of the song as it accentuates the idea that it is a natural part of life, but acknowledging your mistake is important, which the artist does through the video. This creates the impression that the target audience of the artist should look at their own relationships and analyse whether they are in an unhealthy position or not, which adds to her image of a self-aware artist, which is revealed on her website.
The narrative in the video shows a group of girls and is cyclical, with the video returning to the second location and blending two times to create ambiguity over when each takes place. The video begins with the girls getting ready for a party. The first shot is of one girl putting a necklace on another, which links to romance as it is often used to symbolise this, as in High School Musical and Vampire Diaries, both of which are a stereotypical part of the artist's target audience. This foreshadows them being closer and leaving the third girl out. This closeness continues throughout the video, as shown through shots including the two of them and not the third girl and moving in a more synchronised manner, like when they throw rocks into the ocean, which is an intertextual link to the recent re-make of "Little Women". "Little Women" is referenced again with the shot of the third girl reading, and the placement of the girls with her versus them throwing rocks is meant to show how their relationship is more romantic, as the characters who did these different things in the film had a platonic and romantic relationship respectively. The third girl eventually confronts them about being left out at the party, after she has 'drunk some alcohol' which loosens her inhibitions and the other two dance alone, leaving her out once again. She leaves the party after the argument and the conflict is not resolved, and her leaving the party earlier can be viewed in an ambiguous manner. She could either have been at a different party with them and left happily, they ended up making up or they never argued in the first place and it was her imagining what would have happened had she brought it up at the party whilst alone at the beach. The editing of the beach scenes and earlier party scenes are colour-graded to be warm-toned and relate a feeling of friendship whereas the later party scenes and shots of her alone at the beach are cold-toned to show her feelings of isolation and abandonment.
The performance in the video is shot in four different locations, two different rooms at the party, one with party-lighting and the other with red and white fairy lights. To try and create good-quality lighting, the shots are also lit with a torch and red tissue paper to emulate the fairy-lights. The other two locations are a set of steps which has white walls with a green tinge and yellow railings, and a grey bridge with a blue sky. For the party lighting, the performer dressed in a red dress with her own personal twist like the other actors wore to the 'party' and for the tunnel and bridge she wore a large blue coat, black joggers, large white shoes, a white top with a silver chain and braided hair. This is clothing that appeals to the target audience and also creates a sense of solidarity between her and one of the girls in the narrative as the coat and shoes are shared, as addressed earlier. These locations and clothing relate to the colour scheme of both locations in the narrative.
The editing between the performances and narrative is purposefully mainly separated with the performance mainly taking place during the chorus to not take away from the narrative. The performance is purposefully blurred in places to add emphasis, such as on the line "there's a glow about you / this is the perfect night to catch a cold" in the second chorus just after the shift from the bridge to the tunnel. There are effects in the narrative that also do this, such as when it is sped up or the glitching effect in the third verse when the third character is thinking about her good times with her friends but it returns to her alone, with the colour-grading showing her very different emotions.
In this video I am representing ethnicity as two of the main characters are ethnic minorities and the other two are Caucasian. The artist being half-Japanese is unusual for a pop-video but I am hoping the presentation of archetypes and subversions of the norm will show how the artist is progressive, which is exemplified through her trying to help the environment on the website.
My music video will include intertextual references to strong, independent women through shots relating to them and is, at its core, is a homage to women and girls of all ages, genders and ethnicities because whether it be as a friend or a carer, women are significant and there is a lot of negativity surrounding female empowerment that needs to be dissolved.
Relating to the codes and conventions of the pop genre, I will have bright colours and high-quality lighting unless it is a stylistic feature. I will include media language in order to create a stylish music video as well as editing the video in order to achieve better colour and shots that develop the narrative how I want. Most of the shots will take place in summer as it follows the conventions of the genre and will provide good natural lighting. Through the diversity in the video, I hope the audience will be able to relate to and understand the message of the video and song: that no matter what, they are special and as long as they are kind it does not matter what they enjoy. Through the actors doing things that they genuinely enjoy, I am hoping they will be more comfortable and confident in their shots which should create a sense of ease and enjoyment to watch through the camera. The cinematography will follow conventional pop-music conventions such as having the money to have these things to enjoy, such as a gaming console or being able to travel to another country which is hot and sunny. The lighting being generally high-key and purposefully attractive is also a convention of the pop genre.
My website's two pages are the homepage and the gallery. The homepage displays a photo from the location of one of the performances and has a link to the video on it which creates synergy with the video. This is emphasised by the font being that which is used in the video. The gallery also features photos from the same locations as in the video, though there are also photos in other locations at different times of year that create the impression that the artist already has a fanbase that she is trying to appeal to. This range of locations and styles show how she is attempting to stay up-to-date with each season at least.
Therefore, the video and website both help promote key messages that appeal to the target audience of 16-25 year olds that are mainly female whilst also appealing to a large audience by staying 'trendy' with her outfits and regular updating of the website.
